The Old Lochmaddy School Project
The Lochmaddy Primary School was amalgamated with the other primary schools in North Uist in 2016 and subsequently fell into dis-use. With assistance from Scottish Land Fund and National Lottery Awards for All funding, NUDC took ownership of the building in 2022. Development Plans, Appraisals Reports were produced and extensive local consultation took place. These plans and reports include Internal Plans for Phase 1, Architect's Report, Community Needs Analysis, Options Appraisal, Building Options Appraisal and Feasibility Study. It was envisaged that the building could provide a community hub filling the needs of the local community as expressed through consultation, to improve health and wellbeing; provide improved facilities and services; support business growth for economic development; and provide work opportunities to help sustain the population.
The old school was opened as a community resource in 2022. It is available to accommodate a range of community and business uses. Space can be booked for talks, workshops, meetings and remote working. Contact [email protected] or @OldLochmaddySchool for more information.

A major element of the old school is the Environment Centre which showcases the Àrainneachd Àlainn environment exhibition. It is intended to:
•Celebrate Uist and Barra’s magnificent natural environment.
•Fill the existing shortfall in readily available information including inter-relationships between various components of the natural environment.
•Provide an educational resource for schools.
•Provide a forum for meaningful discussion of environmental issues and identifying sustainable ways forward in islands particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.
•Provide information on sustainable technologies and practices to help mitigate the effects of climate change and minimise marine pollution.

OLD LOCHMADDY SCHOOL FUTURE PLANS
While much has been achieved that has enabled the Development Company to open the building for a range of activities, there remains a significant amount to be done that could expand the scope of the building and offer much more for the community of Uist. Currently the Environment Exhibition provides locals and visitors the opportunity to appreciate Uist's wonderful natural environment and the community spaces offer a welcoming atmosphere where people and local organisations can meet together to enjoy talks and workshops. The business potential is yet to be fully realised. Space for individuals as well as small starter businesses is in short supply in Uist. The old school has ideal space to accommodate such demand. The Development Company will seek funding to provide the appropriate facilities.
