North Uist

From the beauty of the beaches on the Udal peninsula to the burial chamber of Barpa Langais, via the Scolpaig Tower and statue remembering Hercules the Bear, North Uist is a wonder on the edge of the Atlantic. Walking, wildlife, and tradition bring people from around the globe - but to others it is simply home.
North Uist at a glance:

  • North Uist is located in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles) in Scotland.
  • The island's Gaelic name is Uibhist a Tuath.
  • Also included in Uibhist a Tuath are the inhabited islands of Griomasaigh (Grimsay), Am Baile Sear (Baleshare), and Bearnaraigh (Berneray).
  • All the islands are linked by causeway and are in turn joined to the island of Benbecula.
  • With an area of 117 square miles, it is the tenth largest Scottish island and the thirteenth largest island surrounding Great Britain.
  • The population is just under 1,600.
  • The traditional mainstays of the local economy have been crofting and fishing.  While these remain crucial to the economic viability of the islands, new growth areas include fish farming, tourism, teleworking and the public sector, as well as a growing interest in renewables.
