A busy few weeks at Old Lochmaddy School. First, Shona MacLellan of the RSPB stopped by to speak about the Gaelic names of birds, before the 'Built by Humans, Reclaimed by Nature' photography competition concluded with a prize ceremony. Congratulations to the winner Jason Tolmie, as well as runners up Sarah Campbell and Rhona Skivington, and a major thank you to all those who submitted their work.
The morning of the prizegiving also included a talk by Dr Jean Archer on the building stones of Uist, giving context to the rocks in the photos that were displayed in the school throughout November. The next Saturday, Will Smith rounded off the talk series with a talk on the on-going studies into the genetics of Uist's rock dove colonies. There is, of course, great appreciation to Will and all the speakers throughout the series for giving their time and energy, as well as those who attended in support. With December upon us, the environment exhibition at the old school will now take a winter break, providing the opportunity to add some new content, spruce up the building, and line up events for 2026. It will reopen in the spring, and hopefully see you then. In the meantime, a final thank you to all those who visited this year, whether to the exhibition or one of the events or talks. Thank you.
